Oh dear, now I fear that the End Time preachers might be right. David Ritchie has written a political post. And it has nothing to do with those he loves most or certainly lots -- the Scots -- nothing to do with bizarre cars, nothing to do with dance or fancy swords or Academic Boards. nothing touching on the cavilling of his travelling troupe, no call to beat cannons into pacifist canons, nothing whatever to do with odd names and the shames they ironically reflect.

Historians have, or in my view should have, strong reservations about saying anything even authoritative-seeming about the present. We see patterns in past circumstances but, as your investment advisor will tell you, patterns are an unreliable guide to the particulars of the present. On general trends, we're trusthworthy; on whether the Republicans will win the House this time around, we're not.

But since you have clearly exhibited the secret sign, known only to the Knights Templar and Arnold Schwarzenegger (appearing in this sequence courtesy of photography by Robert Mapplethorpe--did you know he modeled for Mapplethorpe?), I can reveal that the End Time will not come much before Tuesday.

As to which Tuesday...well if I revealed that, I'd have to kill you.

With a sword.
