And as I understand it, there's a limit to the amount of pounds a
candidate and his cronies may spend on the campaign.

ours has no fixed date -- the term is a maximum -- so in theory,
campaigning begins when the date's announced.  It is a bit less tiring
that the US one!

Here polls don't seem to affect the vote -- at least, not in any one
way.
