wondering why her daughter eschewed science in favour of sewing, when given
the choice .

ck: Probably because she likes clothes, and figured she'd make some for
herself. Very practical, in short-term thinking teen terms. Sewing will set her
up for a hobby; science, on the other hand--well, I sure hope you nixed her
choice. I'm surprised they even offer sewing as a veritable subject in school
nowadays.
