This is perhaps overly harsh (although all opera singers would have been called
this thirty years ago, time has passed). Perhaps it is more accurate to say
'Ein kleiner unscheinbarer bescheidener Mann mit einer fantastischen
tiefsinnigen und großen Stimme, die unter die Haut geht und mitten ins Herz
trifft'.
The video is moving but this is at least partly because of the "shy, humble man
with an extraordinary talent" aspect. Some might say he 'has a face only a
mother could love' but then there is a little mother in most of us, isn't
there, awww?. Technically flawed then but movingly expressive.
That said, he did sell carphones for a living. Can we forgive? The debate
continues.
