Wasn't it in Gulliver's Travels where the fellow shows up on an island where
the pebbles in
the road were diamonds, rubies, and gold? So he fills his pockets with these
pebbles.

Soon, he finds a roadhouse, goes in, had a large dinner, and, when asked to
pay, he reaches
in his pocket and scatters diamonds, rubies, and gold nuggets across the table.

The restaurant owner wasn't amused by the attempt to pay with pebbles.
