[lit-ideas] Replicators: 200 John Donnes?

What would happen if someone builds a device that can replicate anything, incl.
itself?
If it can replicate itself, soon there would be millions of them and they would
be basically
free ("hey, can i have another one?") and whatever they replicate would also be
basically
free ("how about a swap: my 3000 DVD players for your 2000 MP3 players?")
How would this affect economics? The North/South Divide?
