        As Ren=E9e Moral had suggested, the riddle of Shakespeare's =
Patience on=20
a monument is indeed solved by Cesare Ripa=A0; to be specific, by the=20
fourth and final entry under the heading =93=A0Patienza=A0=94 in Cesare =
Ripa,=20
Iconologia, Roma MDXCIII, p. 197. Here it is (unless some stupid=20
machine thinks the text I've laboriously typed out is an attachment,=20
and refuses  to send it):

disposta=20
cose=20
terrene.

        I've placed the phrases that interest us between asterisks=A0: =
patience=20
is *seated on a rock*, which *...demonstrates that it is a difficult=20
thing to know how to direct patience with a tranquil heart, but that it=20=

can easily be overcome*

        Voila. With regard to the argument that emblem books are too =
osbcure=20
to be Shakespeare's source, I say: Balderdash. There's lots of stuff=20
that is obscure in Shakespeare, and Renaissance artists used emblem=20
books as their sources all the time.

        Best, Mike.
