Donal McEvoy:
>"T Eliot" is 'toilet' in reverse
This reminds me of Arrigo Boito. There are contrasting views on his work.
His first work was "Mefistofele" an opera now available on DVD in _two_
versions. This was a landmark in his career from the moment it opened at
LaScala in Milano. He was unable to use his real name for the next twenty years
-- such was the negative reaction from the public.
He started to sign his work as "Tobia Gorrio", which is a perfect acronym.
But yesterday, I was reading my "Repertory of Opera" -- bedside reading --
and I read under "La Gioconda": the opera by Ponchielli, has a libretto by
'Tobia Gorrio', since the librettist was not too happy with the result. I
think he was _mighty_ happy, only he knew the Milanese would _not_ be.
Cheers,
J. L. Speranza
Buenos Aires, Argentina
