To Judy, Mike, anyone else...I have now seen a number of episodes of
"Father Ted," available on tape. It has the shape of a British
sitcom--restricted number of characters drawn with stereotypes in view,
a catchphrase oft-repeated, a predictable plot trajectory--but the
setting is unusual and the whole thing is weirdly funny.
Three Irish priests live together on Craggy Island. The oldest one is
a shell of a man who drinks floor cleaner and yells "Feck off" at
anyone who approaches. The middle one has fantasies. The youngest one
is engagingly stupid and gets to say things like, "That whole thing
with the bread and the wine, we're not supposed to believe that bit are
we?" At one point he is asked how many crisp packets he had to collect
in order to become a priest.
