Oh, and in case ranting doesn't do it for you this eve, take heart from the heartwarming story of a mathematician who, though being born in Belgium, decided to specialize in modern group theory at the College de France, and now has achieved, at age 77, one half of the $1.2 million Abel prize money, which was presented to him by Norway's King Harald V. In addition to shaping group theory, the winner is also preeminent in algebra.
