Hi all,

I have been working on getting RH 8.0 up & running on this computer.
There are still a number of things that configuring here and there, but
right now I'm concentrating on an internet connection. I have managed
to set things up properly for my local ISP (I've set it up as device
'ppp0' under the 'network device control' window)- I can send & retrieve
mail (at least using ximian for now, haven't gotten pine and fetchmail
going yet) and I can browse the internet no problem.

Now, here's the rub: I'm trying to set up a second device (ppp1) for a
second ISP (Earthlink), and I've set it up basically the same as for the
first ISP (changing only the appropriate login, etc. type of stuff).
But I can't get a connection established.

Here is the output from "tail -f /var/log/messages":
================

=====================

Obviously, the next to last line is telling me the reason why thing are
going awry, but I don't know enough to decipher exactly what that means
and how/what I should change. Also, after the modem hangs up, it tries
again after a brief pause, but of course the results are still the
same. And in the "network device control" window, the status of device
ppp1 is shown as "active", yet it won't let me deactivate it, and I
haven't been able to find a pid to kill, so I have to reboot to overcome
that.

Anybody have any ideas/suggestions?

I emailed Earthlink tech support last night, and they gave me some
instructions, only it's for RH 5.0, and I can't quite correspond that to
RH 8.0 FWIW, these are the (condensed) instructions sent by Earthlink:

1. start an X session
2. click in root window and open RH Control Panel, or open an xterm and
type control-panel & [but when I tried this, it crabbed about not
having control-panel]
3. open modem icon in control panel window
4. select modem's device location (cua0=COM1, cua1=COM2, etc.)
5. save settings
6. open network icon
7. click name button and enter:
    domain: earthlink.net
    name server: 207.217.126.81
(if you can enter a second DNS address, enter 207.217.77.82)
8. click interface button and add ppp0 [for me, since i already have my
local ISP at ppp0, I assume this would be ppp1 instead - but from #3 I
couldn't do anything as they've said, since it didn't have the control
panel]
9. enter user, password
10. select modem speed,
    communications: init: AT&F or AT&F1
    enter access number
    select installed modem
click network button in control panel
MTU: 576 (can experiment with MTU=1500, also)
11. to connect, highlight ppp0 and click "activate"; to disconnect,
click "de-activate". To check connection, open an xterm and type 'tail
-f /var/log/messages". Check that you have been assigned an IP address
and that no error messages are reported. [well, I already knew about
activate/deactivate. But the info about the messages log was helpful,
so I included it above]

Sorry for being so long-winded, but I didn't want to be accused of not
submitting enough info :)
