  Scott & all,

  Found it.

Well, don't have a .Xdefaults either. But the doc I found (in
French) explained it. Don't know why I don't have a .Xdefaults,
don't know why, as the doc I'd found suggested I use, I didn't
have a .inputrc either. Anyway, made one & entered:

# To get Home, End, Delete, Esc + Delete & Esc + Backspace to act
# properly [of course, this was all originally in French....]
"\e[1~":beginning-of-line
"\e[3~":delete-char
"\e[4~":end-of-line
"\e\C-h": backward-kill-word
"\e\e[3~": kill-word

I opened a new terminal & sure enough, the keys are working.

My question is, why would this install, in which I've done
nothing differently concerning my terminal (always use
GnomeTerminal set to rxvt -- for better colour...).

Ah, wait. I'm using a different font this time. But setting
it back to what I used to use didn't fix it.

So, I'm back where I started. I wonder why files I know I've
dealt with in other installs of RH 7.2 simply aren't there. Odd.

  Anyway, I'm set now.

  Thanks.

  Meph
