Hi,
Below is a message from my friend Alex about various differences between United States grade 2 and UEB grade 2. Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph

As I understand it, North American literary is the same as what used to be grade 2 and is now contracted. So, punctuation: 뷲ll major symbols are the same - dashed, periods, commas, apostrophes, question marks, exclamation marks, and quotes. 븊he parentheses and other groupings are different; instead of the lowered g representing parentheses, 5, 1 2 6 is a left parenthesis and 5, 3 4 5 is a right parenthesis. Replace dot 5 with dots 4 6 for brackets (which are parentheses with a dot 6 before them in grade 2) and 4 5 6 for braces (which I don't think are even represented in grade 2). 뷼ndicators have changed. A star or asterisk is now 5, 3 5 instead of the double 3 5 it is in grade 2. The bullet symbol, not present in grade 2 to my knowledge, is 4 5 6, 2 5 6. 븄ther symbols I can think of: dollar sign is 4, 2 3 5 compared to 2 5 6, degrees is 4 5, 2 4 5, ampersand is 4, 1 2 3 4 6.

Contractions:
븁ost contractions stay the same. However, any that involve dot 6 before a letter, specifically "ation" and "ally", are not used. This lets you insert a capital letter into a word without worrying about it being translated as a contraction. 븊he lowered f is still a double f inside a word. It is not, however, a contraction for "to" when used in front of a word; the word "to" is to be written out and separated by a space like any other word. *the lower d is no longer the double d, but instead always represents a period, even in a word. 븊he number sign (3 4 5 6) is no longer "ble", but is instead always indicative of a number. This means that the "ble" endings of words like "trouble" or "bubble" must be written out, but that you can insert numbers into words or math equations with no fear of mistranslation. 뷲ny grade 2 contractions that can be written with no spaces between them (a, for, of, with, the, and) are to be separated with a space. Their contractions are used, but spaces are required like any other words. 븉imilar to "to", the word "by " is no longer represented by a dropped j connected to the next word. Instead, "by" is written out and separated by a space. 븊he grade 2 rule that contractions must not span syllables is no longer in place. This means you can, for instance, use the st contraction in the word "mistake" or "mistrust". 븊he 3 6 contraction meaning "com" is no longer used and the "com" prefix must be written out. Dots 3 6 always mean a dash in UEB.

That's all I can think of for the moment. Let me know if you have any other questions, or if I was not clear on anything. On Nov 16, 2012, at 9:25 AM, Joseph Lee <joseph.lee22590@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:

Hi,
I need the following resources:
* Differences in punctuation and other symbols between North American
Literary Braille (USA code) and UeB.
* Differences between USA and UeB in terms of text presentaitons,
namely changed contraction rules.
Thanks.
//JL P.S. If you haven't I think you should also join LibLouis list
(if you have time).

Sure. What exactly are you looking for in terms of symbols? Note that my experience is only from the bn as well, so any errors hw made will stay that way. Still, I'm sure we can make a better one than what is there already, so
ask away.

Hi Alex,
Decided to ask for assistance regarding NVDA and UeB table:
Since you know UeB and have used NVDA before, could you help me with some pointers on symbols for grade 1 and grade 2 UeB? I'm working on improving the UeB table (actually, building UeB tables from scratch since the version that ships with NVDA has some serious errors). For testing and verification, I'm using my Apex, which is set to use UEB
output.
Once the links to symbol list is received, I plan to pass it onto
LibLouis list so the devs over there so they can have a handy
reference. Thanks.
