I might be to blame for this, I'm very sorry. The story is that in order
to compile from svn you need to a) run autogen.sh (which requires
autoconf, automake and libtool to be installed) and b) run configure
with the --enable-maintainer-mode option. This will enable some make
target to build the documentation. I don't know off-hand how this could
be avoided.
