I'm slightly embarrassed to ask what will seem a silly question -- but
what is the "DMR"?

It's the Leica Digital-Modul-R, unfortunately discontinued after only a few
thousand were produced (it's a long, sad story). The DMR was made to fit
the R8 and R9. I've been using one for the last 3+ years and I now have a
backup DMR as well.
