Lucky man, Alex, and late MHRs,
according to Laney it should be from 1926/1927 (very early!!). He mentions conversions from I to I (interchangeable lenses),II, II sync,III, IIIA, and IIIA sync.
Very much looking forward to seeing it "on-screen".
cheers
Douglas

Hi all.

My wife gave me a beautiful, cosmetically mint, black-paint Leica III for my big six zero last March - it was even older than me, but looked in much better condition!

However, it needed some mechanical and optical work done on it, so I sent it across to my Leica guru, Malcolm Taylor, in the UK.

He's just rung me to say he's just finished up on it, and it is now indeed almost perfect: new r/f mirror, new blinds, and the contemporary 50/3.5 Elmar has been coated and adjusted to couple correctly.

He's also writing a provenance for it based on what he found when he opened it up. Apparently it started life as a Leica I, was converted to a III pre-war, and was then further modified by Leitz around 1950. Someone obviously loved that camera!

It has a four figure s/n - from memory I think it was 4387, but whether that number was original or as a result of the mods I don't know. Anyone got any ideas?

Anyway, when it eventually arrives I'll set up a couple of pages about it on my home pages. It'll be particularly interesting to see how coating improves the Elmar's performance.

Best

Alex
