Thanks Doug, that's what I thought at first too.I just tried it out on a DSLR and managed to reproduce the effect - it is very probably the lens!
The effect appears when bright light comes in from more or less directly above. The colour of the splodge also seems to correspond to the colour of the lens coating when viewed obliquely.
