Friday afternoon, Jennifer Miller joined us for an enjoyable trip west of
Shallowater, where we all had very good sustained views of the Lewis's
Woodpecker, and 2 Great Horned Owls.

For the owls, leaving Hwy 84 on CR 100, pass 2 electric poles, and see a group
of trees about 100 ft west of the road. The 2 owls are in the last tree on the
south end of this group.

About .7 miles further south the caliche surface ends, and a small tractor and
other orchard equipment is east of the road among the pecan trees. On the west
side of the road, one of the fence posts has a flat top, good place to perch my
camera.
Luckily, just as we arrived the Lewis's Woodpecker flew from the trees near the
metal shed, probably 5 or 6 hundred feet west of the road, and passed over on
the way to the pecan trees. It appeared to be black, with pinkish head. It
quickly flew back to the trees near the shed. Perched on a tree trunk, it then
appeared to be a very dark green.
It seemed to be cracking a pecan, which can be seen in one of my photos.
(Danny Pickens probably got better photos that I did).
Altogether a great outing, thanks to Jennifer for sharing that time with us.

Just off HWY 84 on CR 1100 about 200 feet, there is a group of trees. Clarice
spotted a Great Horned Owl in the last tree of that group. It is in the last
tree, right against the trunk.
I got several photos of it.

The line of trees leading west to the shed is about .7 mile from HWY 84.
A Red-tailed Hawk was in those trees by the shed about 9:30am.
We could not spot the Woodpecker, too cold to stand outside!

Greetings All:

Phillip Kite and I watched and photographed the Lewis's Woodpecker from 2:05 to
2:45 PM this afternoon and, when we left the bird was still there. To see the
bird drive south from Highway 84 on CR 1100 (turn off of Highway 84 at the rest
area just west of Shallowater) and proceed to where there is a large orchard to
the east and a line of trees leading to a large shed to the west. The bird is
frequenting the large trees near the shed. Be advised, there is also a
Northern Flicker present at this site.
