It completely takes over the card, and if you have only one card,
then you are prevented from getting any kind of wireless connectivity
with any other program.
There's a reason why it is supposed to be enabled/disabled on
demand -- some people have iBooks and other computers that only have
one wireless device internally and no option to add in cards.
