What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?
Career pacifist and volunteer teacher Colman McCarthy could easily be
written off as a holdover from the '60s. There's just one catch: In
this uncertain time, his students think otherwise.

Leadership and the Dave Matthews Band
>From The School Administrator, September 2003.
Effective education leaders must be able to create a story, based on
personal conviction, that "conveys a sense of purpose and captures the
minds and hearts of their followers," writes school superintendent
Bradley J. Reiger. Reiger's own motivational story revolves around the
Dave Matthews Band and the boy who introduced him to their music.

Looking Inside the Classroom:
A Study of K-12 Mathematics and Science Education in the United States

The average math and science lesson is "far from the ideal," according
to a study. "We do our kids a disservice by choosing one pedagogy and
using it all the time," said Iris R. Weiss, the president of Horizon
Research Inc. The study suggests teachers try a variety of strategies.

Who's In Charge Here?
Most folks agree: Kids in the United States today are the most
pampered and indulged in history. They often seem to have raised to
assume they will always get their way. But this Time story says there
are clear signs that an adult rebellion is brewing.

BE THE DREAM:
Prep for Prep Graduates Share Their Stories
compiled and introduced by Gary Simons (Algonquin, 374 pp., 12.95)
This book assembles memoirs by 35 alumni of "Prep for Prep," an
intensive academic program that helps transition disadvantaged New
York public school students into elite independent high schools. The
program has had marked success. Not only do a high percentage of the
participants matriculate at independent school. They also appear to be
instilled with a vivid sense of empowerment. While a limited program
like "Prep for Prep" can't solve our nation's educational problems,
writes TEACHER MAGAZINE's reviewer David Ruenzel, "it is undeniably a
powerful program that bolsters the skills and aspirations of
disadvantaged youngsters who would have a slim chance at success
without it."

INSIDE MRS. B's CLASSROOM
Courage, Hope, and Learning on Chicago's South Side
By Leslie Baldacci (McGraw-Hill)
In 1999, Leslie Baldacci, a journalist with 25 years of experience,
left the newspaper business to teach in one of Chicago's toughest
neighborhoods. Here she offers, according to the publisher, a
"first-hand narrative from the trenches of the inner-city school
system. ..." Baldacci's reflects on both the unimagined difficulty of
the job--she was even put on "remediation" during her first year--as
well its surprising rewards. After two hard years on the job, she
believes in the power of teachers to make a difference in students
lives.

RACE IN THE SCHOOLYARD:
Negotiating the Color Line in Classrooms and Communities
by Amanda E. Lewis
(Rutgers University Press, 288 pages, $22 paperback.)
Described as an "ethnography," this book takes readers both inside the
classroom and out to the playground to show the ways students learn
about race in school. The author, a sociologist and African-American
studies professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, visited
three elementary schools; two she describes as multiracial urban and
one, white suburban. Over the course of a year, she discovered how
race insinuates itself into everyday life in the schools. Her analysis
shows how teacher-student and student-student interactions frame ideas
about race, helping to perpetuate some of the continuing racial
inequalities in schools.

            AROUND THE WEB: EDITOR'S PICKS

Educational Bloggers Network

Weblogs--essentially personal online journals--have begun to surface
in the education world. As Mark Toner observes in his TEACHER MAGAZINE
Story (see "Classroom Currents," at top), teachers have taken to
blogging for everthing from collaboration on curriculum to sharing
news and resources to just plain venting. A good place to learn more
about teacher blogs is the Education Bloggers Network, "a
collaborative of teachers and organizations using Weblogs in
education." The organization's home page unfurls excerpts from
participants' work as well as links to their individual blogs. The
site also includes a directory of bloggers and variety of resources
and tools for bloggers--in the event you might want to start one
yourself. All blogs are not created equal, of course, but browsing
this site you can't help but feel that blogging has given teachers an
important new outlet for expression.

Also, take a look at two of teacher blogs featured in the TEACHER
MAGAZINE article:
