VERISIGN SUSPENDS SITE FINDER
VeriSign has agreed to temporarily shut down its recently debuted Site
Finder service at the insistence of the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which sent a letter to VeriSign
saying that the company risked penalties if it did not take down the
service. The Site Finder application redirects users who have mistyped
or misspelled domain names to a VeriSign Web page that includes paid
advertising. VeriSign reportedly hoped to earn significant revenues
from those ads, but the ICANN letter said this arrangement violated
VeriSign's status as a neutral administrator of the .com and .net
domains. ICANN had originally asked VeriSign to disable the service
shortly after it appeared in mid-September. In addition to questions
over neutrality for the domain administrator, complaints have surfaced
about Site Finder's reported interference with spam filters and about
whether the service lowered the Internet's resistance to attacks. A
spokesman from VeriSign said the company would shut down the service
while it explored its options.

BRITISH MPS CALL FOR STRONGER ANTI-SPAM POWERS
A group of British MPs has written a report calling for changes to
recently enacted anti-spam legislation and for increased authority for
the agency responsible for enforcing the legislation. The report from
the All Party Parliamentary Internet Group echoed others who have said
that the United Kingdom's new anti-spam law, which requires consent
before sending any commercial e-mail to homes, should also apply to
business e-mail addresses to be effective. Writers of the report also
said that the Information Commissioner should be granted broader
authority to pursue those accused of violating anti-spam regulations.
Also included in the report is a recommendation that other agencies
besides the Information Commissioner share the responsibility for
enforcing anti-spam laws.

SCREENSAVER PASSWORDS BETTER THAN LOGIN PASSWORDS
Analysts at risk-management company TruSecure argue that a
password-protected screensaver can do more to increase computer
security than lengthy login passwords. According to the company, a
significant portion of security breaches happen within organizations.
Unauthorized access of an unattended computer, the company said,
presents a much greater risk than hackers outside the company.
TruSecure also noted that if a company assigns long, complex passwords
to employees, those employees are much more likely to write the
passwords down, further compromising the security of a network login.
Jay Heiser, chief analyst at TruSecure, suggested that hardware
solutions--such as a token or a smartcard--offer better protection than
passwords. "You always know if your hardware has been stolen," he said.
