Vista separates out the operating files and the user files for any program. Operational files like the exe and DLL's go in the folder you nominated at install. User files get shoved elsewhere in Vista's horrible Virtual Store. By user files I mean any file that gets changed after installation so this includes all CFG and INI files. The Virtual Store is buried away in your User/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/ProgramFiles folder. Good luck hunting it out. If you need to go in there a lot it may be better making a shortcut to the Virtual Store folder. I avoid the Virtual Store if I can. I know some users turn off UAC but that's not a good idea. My preferred option is never accept the default installation path pointing to the Program Files location. If you install to this location Vista automatically creates the Virtual Store entry. If you install to your own folder choice outside Program Files (say C:/FlightSim) then no Virtual Store data gets created. I don't know what happens when you try making backups of your data after Vista has separated out all the files. If you just copy your FS folder to an external drive it will be missing the current CFG and INI files. I wonder if Windows7 uses the same process? bones bones@xxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: jhb-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jhb-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Gerry Winskill Sent: 19 October 2009 14:17 To: JHB Restricted Subject: [jhb] Vista Query I'm still trying to cope with the sadistic side of Vista, on my laptop. Someone must have been there before, so where does it hide FSX's Scenery.cfg? I've changed settings so that folders are not hidden but it still says there's no Scenery.cfg on the machine.
