oh believe me, mine is a high end but doesn't have the Pentium M processor.
It could hold it's own, but it does lack in a couple areas on my desktop,
not disappointed, I knew that would happen though it was advertised as a
desktop replacement, the average user wouldn't never notice the differences
but I work on and use computers all the time and I notice little things.

My only point is that laptops vary quite a bit in their capabilities,
based on your needs and how much you are willing to spend.

The desktop replacement laptops, say the thinkpad R and G series from
IBM, as well as some models of the T series, have performance
measurements as good as your average desktop. The fact that your laptop
doesn't, or Gene's laptop doesn't, proves nothing. I'm sorry you're
both disappointed, so my advice should be modified to say: buy a laptop,
but if speed is your most important criteria, spend time researching it
so you get one comparable to a desktop. =20

Also, a note to you and Gene, most laptops have various power scheme
settings you can choose from. The more expensive ones which use the
Pentium M chipset, which can vary it's speed and so vary its power
consumption, are particularly sensative to which of the power schemes
you choose. You can choose between high system performance and long
battery life, and some balance inbetween. If you're using it on the a/c
power most of the time, and you want it to perform like a desktop, make
sure you've got a power scheme selected that maximizes system
performance (usually by not allowing the processor to lower it's clock
rate). Without this, a Pentium M series can often run its clock at a
third of it's specified rating in order to maximize battery life. This
can happen even when it's on a/c power (although this depends on the O/S
and the laptop manufacturer as to the details of their power management
driver software; btw, this works much better when running xp sp2, which
has built-in power management support for the Pentium M chipset). =20

You should know that the less expensive AMD chipsets, and the Pentium
lines which are not part of the Pentium M series, do not have this
ability to vary their clock speed.
