to delete or not the prefetch files in xp os

Hi all,
I read some articles about cleaning and deleting temp and other temproary files.
I saw there that in xp os, it's good to delete the c:\windows\prefetch files
too.
Can some one tell me whether I can do this deletion without causing any damage
to the operating system of xp pro?
Any help is much appreciated
