HI,
Did you edit the Jaws default dictionary? If you didn't then it won't work
for every application. Having said that, this method is the dirty way of
doing what you want. The actual "JAWS for windows is ready" message is
hard coded into Jaws itself and all you are really doing is trying to guess
exactly how this message is written in and making a dictionary entry for
it. So if you don't quite get the original message correct in your jaws
dictionary and you haven't saved it in the Jaws default dictionary then it
won't work.
What you really want is a program which allows one to edit the properties
of dll and executable files. Such programs do exist and allows one to edit
these sorts of hardcoded strings. You can even change the look and feel of
programs if you know what you are doing. The program I use is called

Hi Dianna,
I'm sorry this didn't work for you. I did this earlier in
the week and had no problem. Here is exactly what I did.
In JAWS, I opened the JAWS dictionary.
I tabbed to "add an entry.
In the field for the word or phrase, I typed "JAWS for
windows is ready" without the quotation marks.
I tabbed once to the next field and entered the message I
wanted to hear on JAWS start up.
Then I tabbed to "ok".
When I closed the menu, I answered yes to the "save changes
to default prompt".
As others have said, you can add a sound to your message,
but I just kept it simple.
HTH
Blessings.

This has been covered already, but
I'll repeat it anyway. The easiest way to change the JAWS start-up message
is to use the Dicttionary Manager. Follow these steps:
1. Go to the JAWS Utilities menu
and select Dictionary Manager.
2. Hit Space on the Add... dialog
to select the Add Dictionary Definition dialog.
3. In the Actual Word field, type
"jaws for windows is ready." exactly as it appears in quotes.
4. In the Replacement Word field,
type the phrase you would like to hear instead. For example, you could
type in something like, "Hurray!! JAWS 10 is good to go!!".
5. If you wish, you can also add a
sound to play along with the phrase by choosing a sound from the list of
provided sounds.
6. Tab to Okay and hit Space.
7. Close the Dictionary Manager,
and reply with Yes when prompted to save changes. Now, whenever you turn
on your computer or launch JAWS manually, you will hear the new phrase you
just created instead of "JAWS for Windows is Ready".

Shannon,
Why not make this simple? Since so
many people want these instructions, please post them publicly on this list
for all of us to see. Thanks.
