reading word-by-wordd in jaws 8

Hi list,
When I am reading by word using the JAWS key in combination with the left or
right arrow keys, all is well. However, when I try to read word-by-word using
the CTRL key, I run into problems.
A few words are read correctly, but then JAWS simply speaks the key combination
I am using instead of the word.
Any ideas??
