Hi Jean;

It may be that it's an ebook that is protected with Digital Rights
Management (DRM). DRM allows the content creater to disallow certain
actions, such as saving, printing, modifying, etc. that would comprimise the
copyright nature of the material. One such action they can disallow is
"content extraction by access technology". If this has been disabled then
access technologies, such as JAWS, will not be able to access the material.
You can check whether it has this set by looking at the security page of the
document properties (file > document properties).

IMO, in addition to image PDFs, it's always checking the DRM to see if DRM
is active, and if so, what it allows, when you encounter problems reading a
PDF file.

Unfortunately, in situations where the DRM settings prevent content
extraction by access technologies, there is nothing that can technically be
done to gain access. If you know the publisher or content creater, you can
write to them and explain your situation, but that's about it. In the case
of PDF ebook titles, it's not worth contacting the place of purchase, as
it's not the retailer that sets the DRM restrictions, and contacting the
publisher is really the only avenue open to you.

Will
