Press INSERT/JAWS KEY+6, (the number 6 above the letters). This opens the Configuration Manager. 2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the "default.jcf" (Default JAWS Configuration file. 3. Press ALT+S to open the "Settings" Menu. 4. Press the letter "S" to open the "Synthesizer" dialog box. 5. Press the letter "N" to select the "No Speech" synthesizer option. 6. Press ENTER to accept your choice. This will also close the Synthesizer dialog box and Settings Menu and will return you to the open screen of the Configuration Manager. 7. Press CTRL+S to save the change you made to the "default.jcf" file. 8. Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration Manager. 9. Press INSERT/JAWS KEY+F4 to close JAWS and press ENTER on the OK button to confirm that you really want to close and unload the JAWS program. 10. If you only have one version of JAWS installed on your computer, press WINDOWS KEY+M, which minimizes all applications and gives focus to the Desktop. 11. Press the letter "J" to highlight JAWS and press ENTER to launch the program. 12. If you have one or, more than one, version of JAWS installed on your computer, press WINDOWS KEY+R to open the "Run" dialog box. 13. Type, "JAWSXX". Replace "xx" with the version number you are using, without the quotes and with no spaces. Press ENTER to start JAWS with no speech. If I am correct, you have been able to do this since JAWS Version 6. The advantage in using steps 12 and 13, is that they can be used anywhere within Windows or within any application. To have JAWS start with speech, follow the steps above, making the appropriate change in step 5. HTH Sincerely: Dave Durber
