On my Win98 Compaq desktop machine at work it seems to work fine. Here at
home it only effects the monitor but that seems to be fine as well. I think
it depends on the computer. Usually you adjust or disable that in the power
settings menu.

Best bet is to disable the standby mode, I've been there and you're right
I've never had jaws work right afterward, go to your start menu, then
settings, enter on control panel, in there you'll see something like power
management I think it is in windows 98, my win98 machine is off sorry but
I
think that's what it is, it's close either way, enter on that and tab
around. It will have something in there that says "Stand by after then a
number" just down arrow to never tab once and there's another stand by and
another number of minutes, again, down arrow to never, you can do this
with
the turn off monitor and turn off hard disks too if you want, I've had
trouble with them off and on over the years as well depending on the
machine. then tab to apply, then OK, or close and you're all set.
