jaws stops speaking

When I try to add a piece of hardware through the add new hardware wizzard,
jaws will stop speaking. The only way I can get it talking again is by
exiting the wizzard. The same thing happens when I try adding a printer
through the add printer wizard. In the add new hardware wizzard, I get to
the point where I tell it if the hardware is in the list. I can't go any
further. In the add printer wizzard, I select local printer, push next, and
the speech goes away. This happens regardless of what synthesizer I'm using.
Everything else works perfectly. I'm using windows 98 se, on an amd 2600+,
256 mb ram, on a gigabyte ga7l motherboard. The board has the nforce ultra
400 chipset. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
