Even though I am able to use DECtalk Access32 with my little work-around, I would like to see this speech synthesizer work normally with JFW as it did in JFW version 10 and all previous versions. However, I don't believe FS will invest any time and resources in fixing the problem they caused. This is because it is likely that only a few JFW customers still use this speech synthesizer. As far as I know, there is no way to obtain a licensed copy of DECtalk Access32 at this time. The synthesizer will not work on operating systems newer than Windows XP. For these reasons I don't think any amount of email messages will do any good.

I tried my best to get the problem corrected when it first showed up in the final release of JFW 11. After contacting Eric Damery, I sent various ini and jcf files from the last beta where DECtalk Access32 worked fine and from the final JFW 11 release where it did not. The JFW development team said these files didn't help them track down the problem. I never heard anything further on this issue.

A clever programmer-type who is thoroughly familiar with the various files that control the interaction of JFW with its speech synthesizers, if such a person exists, could probably figure out why my little trick of replacing the correct Voice Profile number for DECtalk Access32 with an incorrect one causes the synthesizer to work. Unfortunately, this clever person would need a copy of DECtalk Access32 for testing changes he might make in various control files. This brings us back to the fact that DECtalk Access32 is no longer available.

When this old Windows XP system dies, I guess the stand-alone version of DECtalk Access32 will die along with it. I was hoping that the external DECtalk USB speech synthesizer would be the answer, but if you have ever heard that synthesizer, you know it ain't no DECtalk despite the name.

Hi too all note I changed the subject to reflect what we are all talking about with jaws. To be quite frank, from what I'vered with this topic so far I am disgusted! That this hasn't been fixed! Although I have not used this speach synthesizer, having being happy with eloquence and have used it all the way since I've lost my sight, I really do stress that what one likes need to be fixed if its broken or not! I say this because I have had a moderatly in pared hearing lost since birth and I completely understand what you are all saying! For me for example If we didn't have Eloquence and had only the real speak solo direct synthesizers to use with Jaws, then I'm afraid with a quote, "I just wouldn't be able to use it!" For me its all about clarity and pronunciation. If people would like me too, I would be more than happy to email FS I don't know if they will respond but I feel if we all email them about this issue then the more the need and then the need hopefully becomes a reality! If you would like me to do that then just let me know. A perfect example was when I had mobile speak 1.x something which had the good old eloquence on it! then a few years later having brought a new phone and installed the latest version of mobile speak. I found that they had done away with eloquence which went to talks I emailed the company about mobile speak not having eloquence and they said they couldn't obtain it back because it was tied to talks the other mobile screenreader. What I am getting at is that I think this is disgraceful! Don't they consider people being hearing inpared as well as being blind? Sorry for the rant but to me its very important that I have the right voice to be able to use my screenreader.
Ok well that's my say getting off topic so will stop hear! LOL
Thanks

HI,
AFter there were several good messages about the need for Access 32, we got the usual comment that we should shut upand settle forwhat will "not" allow elder ands ome younger with double hearing loss (even mild) and vision loss to use a screen reader.

This is important.

So I answered this iditot....

Hi,
I spent one entire month.
At thistime, there is no way to get a version of Access 32 that will work

I will definitely give this a try, and thank you very much. . .

No discussion is possible since it is like claiming something is supported and then denying problems all in the same breath, blaming as you say GW-Micro. Proves there is an issue with the suit, seems to me, after all, and quite small of a so-called "leader" in screen readers, tiny and irresponsible and purely childish.

Curtis,
I went round and round with FS when they broke support for the version of DEC Access32 purchased from GW Micro in the JFW 11 Final Release. It worked all the way through the Public Beta of JFW 11 and in all previous versions of JFW. They never admitted to doing anything to break this support. I even wrote to Eric Damery, and he put me in touch with the JFW development team. That didn't do any good either. Even after I explained that this synthesizer had been working on my XP Home system for 5 years, they wanted to blame it on the GW Micro installation. They also wanted me to help them obtain a license for the synthesizer because they claimed they didn't own it. Of course, no licenses are available now from GW Micro.

Now for the good news. I am still using DEC Access32 with both JFW 11 and 12. I'm not guarantying this method will work for anyone else. I have DEC Access32 set to be my Default synthesizer. Unfortunately, this results in Eloquence doing all the talking. By experimentation, I found that I could open Default.jcf in my User Settings folder and enter 4 into the Active equals line instead of the 5 that JFW uses for the DEC Access32 profile. I was never able to figure out why this works, but it does for me. The drawback to this work-around is that if I make any changes in the Voice Profile, my entry of 4 is replaced with 5 again, and I have to perform the replacement once more.

You can try this work-around for yourself, but I can't provide any further help than I have provided here. I would be interested to know though if it works for you.

Jaws 12? and why has FS given up support for Dec_access32 where it just will not either work or if it does at all, it stops immediately. That is what eleven did, and in tweleve, It will not even begin to work.

(xp of course). I am aware that Vista and Windows 7 cannot use Dec_access32, but us XP users it works fine. JFW 10 has no problem with it, but not 11 or 12.
