Steve I know I'm a bit late on this one, but you can use HJPad, the tool used to train users who are new to jfw and word processing. Try creating a document, and saving it, see if it wants to save as a .doc file. If you like, we could meet on skype, and we can then try a few things.

I haave Windows ME and Wordpad saves it as a .doc file unless you change the file type to something else. Wordpad always saves file as a .doc file & Notepad saves it as a .txt file, unless you change the file type, as I said. Hope this helps.
