Basically, the home row is used to look at the structure of an application for scripting purposes. This is referred to as the Windows hierarchy. Home row provides special commands that allow you to query the program structure of a given application or window inside an application such as a dialog box, and get at the individual control IDs, control types, window handles, and other fun things under the hood so-to-speak.

Basically like bruce said, home row is used as a scripting tool. For more information about the home row and what it can do, consult the basics of Jaws scripting manual, found in the explore the manuals menu item under the explore jaws submenu under your main jaws program group. Wow what a crazy sentence that was. grin

Bruce,

Can you comment on the purpose, or the practicality of the home row? I've
never used it, but have like the sender, have accidentally activated it.

You have inadvertently turned the home-row utility on. Press
insert+spacebar and this should solve your problem.

I have a computer that is really messed up. I can go to my desktop and
when I tab
or open My Documents, for one example, I hear most characters, some
characters, all

hear the same
thing. Can someone help? I'm using jaws 8 with XP. Is this a windows
problem or jaws.
