Just checking, as this may be obvious to you.  But have you been sure to go 
into the program's options and set WMP to play the file type you're trying 
to play?

How sure are you that it's not playing? Check your volume  by pressing
f9/f10. f9 is to decrease and f10 increses.

I am unable to get Windows Media Player to play anything -- I have
downloaded a new version (10) and downloaded codec files, but it still
