In its infinite wisdom, FS decided to make FS Reader a function within the JAWS Help menu rather than a stand-alone function. This actually makes some sense, because all of the Daisy books offered by FS are tutorials or help-related topics. If you want to read Daisy books outside of the JAWS Help menu, you need a gadget like the Victor Reader Stream onto which you can download Daisy books. Otherwise, you can visit the FS training materials download page and download most of the available Daisy books as MP3 files and save them wwherever you choose on your computer, and play them using your media player of choice.

you mean, this is how people have to use this program every time? They haveto go to a Help menu and a training item, and click on something? How come there isn't just an icon or an executable file for launching FS Reader? Isn't it sort of an actual, real program? Is it just sort of a sample orsomething? You see what I'm asking? I understand that if I'm trying to learnit, this is how I launch it. Or I guess so. But is that how it works, really? Sounds strange. I feel as if I must be missing something. file----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Foret jr" <rforetjr@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 6:35 PM Subject: Re: What's New in JAWS 10 DAISY and MP3 Files Posted Not even close. 1. You just launch the Daisy thing, and then you pull down somethinglike a files menu, as you might prefer to do in Word, and then you find anyDaisy file on your computer in a long list and click on it? Sort of like that?----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Foret jr" <rforetjr@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 4:51 PM Subject: Re: What's New in JAWS 10 DAISY and MP3 Files Posted Simple. The JAWS updater just drops the files in the proper place so you don't need to know where to put them. To Launch the FS Daisy reader, just do as Jerald instructed you. Here's a reminder. 1. Click on JAWS help. 2. From there, click on training. From there, do as previously instructed. I'll do all this as you suggest. But what about my question concerning what happens when you download this Daisy file aboutJaws 10 features, like where it installs and how you launch the FS Reader toread it? Thanks.----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Levy" <bwaylimited@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 4:32 PM Subject: Re: What's New in JAWS 10 DAISY and MP3 Files Posted Joel, To learn all about FS Reader, simply launch the JAWS Help menu, arrow downonce to Training and hit Enter. The first item should be "FS Reader GettingStarted". Hit enter to bring up the tree view of topics. Hit Enter on thefirst topic and the Daisy book explaining FS Reader will begin playing. Tonavigate in an FS Daisy book, press Control-P to play/pause, Control-S to stop, Control-. to advance forward 5 seconds and Control-, to go back 5 seconds. Hope this is enough to get you started.----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 4:26 PM Subject: Re: What's New in JAWS 10 DAISY and MP3 Files PostedJames, I haven't yet taught myself how to use FS Reader, and don't in fact have anyexperience with Daisy format in any context. Total Daisy newbie. I thoughtthis material might make a good learning project for me. My questions: 1. I understand the instructions for downloading this notice about new Jaws features, although I have no idea where it installs to. Into which folder does the stuff go? What's the file extension? 2. How do you launch FS Reader? Simply by pressing Enter on the filename? Oris there something else you have to do, like find the program somewhere ina folder and launch it? 3. However you start it up, how do I learn to use FS Reader? Is it pretty intuitive, once it launches? I mean with menus and such to explore? Or must I go somewhere either on the FS site or to a file in some Jaws folder already on my computer to study how to use FS Reader? Thanks very much. Hope my questions are clear. -- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions: To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
