It'll be up to the device makers, but both they and FS have incentive
to make the thing work.  NVDA hasn't been around that long and it's
already improving a lot and that's not their only competition.  I have
a hard time believing FS would be short sighted enough to cut off
other vendors of braille displays.

You might, however, have a slow time upgrading to new OS versions.
I'm actually fairly surprised by the number of people on the list with
very new computers, would have expected a lot more lecagy equipment.
