Judith, I can't comment on the preview pane because I keep to the common practice among Jaws users of not using it, as recommended. But if I may intrude about something else, I'd like to say that simply opening an email message doesn't ordinarily expose you to viruses. Yes, there are some malicious software that I understand can run via the HTML code of some emails, but first of all, if you're like the majority of low vision, blind and screen reader users, you probably have your incoming email set to be converted automatically into plain text, even if it arrived in Rich Text (HTML). So that renders those things harmless. The basic thing to remember is that viruses of the sort we're mostly worried about are transmitted not within email messages themselves, but in attachments that activate when you open them. And here is what the actual rule is: Not "delete every email with an unfamiliar sender," but "don't open attachments unless you know what they are, and that they've been sent by someone trustworthy." And that means even writing to ask someone you know if they really just sent you a message with a file attachment, if you weren't expecting it, because viruses are usually sent around by programs that send themselves out from people's address books without the people knowing,, so that it looks legitimate. But instead of being worried, just be prudent and don't open something you're not sure about, until you verify its legitimacy. It won't help anything to just delete unfamiliar stuff as if it's all attacking you. It may even be obnoxious spam trying to sell you junk, but that, for instance, is almost *never* a technical attack. That would be an awful business strategy for those merchants! and just because Jaws is saying there's an attachment on a strange email may not even mean there's actually an attachment, as we sometimes see. For instance, when I get your messages on this list, they often say they have attachments, but that just turns out to be Windows' misinterpretation of something about a virus protection tag line or something like that. Also, and this is a basic, important thing to remember: if there really *is* an attachment, it's completely harmless if you simply don't open it. Hope that's helpful in principle. You wouldn't be the only person who has gone a little too far imagining what the actual dangers are that you must avoid. ust because advance to ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Bron" <jbron@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, September 19, 2005 7:23 AM Subject: Re: Num pad alternatives When I go through my inbox for new messages I delete those I have no idea as to where they came from. I feel that by doing this I can delete potential viruses. When using the preview pane what kind of defense do you hav against potential viruses that norton doesn't catch?
