May need to invoke Narrator to have speech during this, perhaps?

  Hi Marsha,
That's it. Jaws very well could be sleeping, with the synthesizer turned
off. To test this, I went to the desktop, went into Settings Center and
enabled sleep mode for windowsOS, which is the configguration that was loaded
at the time. Sure enough, after applying the setting, I opened the Start menu,
closed it, tabbed over to the task bar, then to the system tray. So far so
good, with speech all the way. As soon as I hit the desktop, JAWS shut up.
There was no speech as I moved around, no how no way.

So, if you're running anything earlier than JAWS 12, go into configuration
manager, go to Set Options, then Advanced. Uncheck the box that says "enable
sleep mode" and click OK, then save the configuration.

If you're using JAWS 12, go into Settings Center, type "sleep" in the search
box. Two results should pop up, one of which should be "enable sleep mode"
press space to uncheck it if it is. Tab to apply and hit space, then tab to OK
and press Enter.

Your desktop should have speech again.

  Hope this helps.

  Tom

HiThe icons are on the desktop but Jaws won't read them. It's almost like
I put the jaws to sleep for the desktop.
