Jaws hanging on words

Hi
We have a problem where JAWS seems to hang up on words. It sort of
stutters & then there is a very brief silence before it starts again. I
thought it might be the sound card. The volume seems to change mostly rising
but sometimes getting quieter. We have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruez sound card.
