Dave, many thanks---an excellent explanation. Guess I suspected some of that but your explanation made this behaviour very clear--many thanks again! ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Truong" <bnfiles@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 2:59 PM Subject: RE: Jaws 6.0 script manager Hi, Let me try to explain this. The scripts distributed with Jaws For = Windows version 6.0 are found in the default C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu = directory. When you call up the script manager intending to modify a distributed = set of scripts for the first time, you will note that the scripts are loaded = from this C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu directory (of course this assumes you = have script manager configured to show the full path of the scripts in the windows title bar). However, when you have made your modifications and compiled the scripts = of course it is logical behaviour for the scripts to then be compiled to = the current user's jaws settings directory. Example, in my case, my user directory is dave, therefore these scripts would be compiled to my C:\Documents and Settings\dave\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu directory. If then you want to make further modifications to these scripts, it will then load the scripts = that you have already modified earlier from your current user's jaws = settings directory, that being in my case C:\Documents and = Settings\dave\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu because now there are = actually scripts in that current user's directory for script manager to load. In other words, script manager first looks in the current user's = settings directory and if the particular scripts you want to modify cannot be = found there then it looks in the all users jaws settings directory that being C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu. Now if you are creating new scripts for an application and you have = script manager configured to show the path of the scripts in the window title = bar, you will notice that the path shown is the default all users jaws = settings directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu. This is normal behaviour as well = because until you compile the scripts, script manager won't know where to save = the scripts to. In other words, if you create a set of new scripts, they = won't appear in your current user's jaws settings directory until you compile = the scripts for the first time. Of course, if you want to make these modified scripts available to every user on your system, you can simply copy the scripts from your user directory into the default all users jaws settings directory that being C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\SETTINGS\enu directory. Note the Jaws directories quoted above may vary a little bit depending = on how your system is set up. However, in most situations, the directories quoted above should be ok except for the current users directory of = course smile. I stand to be corrected on any of the above but that's my impression on = how this whole thing works. I am somewhat perplexed about the behavior of Jaws 6 in terms of where = JFW=20 wants recompiled or new scripts to live. When I first loaded Jaws 6, I = found all scripts to live in the All Users folder under Documents and Settings = with XP Pro. I also found a few scripts in my personal folder. When=20 modifying my Microsoft Word scripts in the All Users area, I was told = that=20 there were no Word scripts in my personal Jerry folders. Can anyone tell = me=20 where the script manager looks when recompiling and where the Jaws = program=20 looks when loading? I am a single user and, hence, the administrator for = the XP pro system. Thanks much.
