I have to agree with Ed on this one. I am running Office XP under Windows 2000. When I have Outlook and several Word documents opened at the same time, JAWS 5 will either read inaccurately (can't navigate tables, get font information, read current line of text) in Word or will get stuck in a pane of Outlook (like the folders pane, and there is no way to get to the list of messages or even to close Outlook). Then, I have to unload and reload JAWS to recover. Now, since I was previously running Office 2000 and JAWS 4.51, I am not sure if all the problems are JAWS 5. Also, I notice a long wait plus a lot of disk activity when closing the last Word document before JAWS announces the application that now has the focus. I am assuming this is a lot of cleanup being performed by Word or JAWS when Word is finally closed, and I am not sure I remember this with JAWS 4.51 and Word 2000. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Edward Marquette Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 2:36 AM To: 'jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: RE: JFW and Office xp? I have been using JAWS with Office XP for over a year and a half. In fact, I was an Office XP user before I became a JAWS user. Because my firm makes extensive use of MS Word's tables, track changes, styles, and screen colors, there really is no other choice. There is no screen reader other than JAWS, to my knowledge, that allows a blind user to use Office XP and these features. I need to be precise, however, because not all versions of JAWS are created equal. Version 4.51, in my experience, is vastly superior to JAWS 5.0. Something is wrong, I think, with the 5.0 video drivers, as many on this list have experienced. JAWS 5.0 gives inaccurate screen information, skips lines, and otherwise behaves erratically, particularly in Office XP. Thus, if you are thinking about Office XP, to be safe, be sure you are using JAWS 4.51 and not 5.0. I am hoping JAWS 5.1 will fix the 5.0 problems. Good luck.
