Caroline,

The feedback I've had on Brailliants is consistently good. The necessary
driver and installation notes will come with the Braille display. In
case that's not enough, here's some notes I've made to remind myself of
how to do it:

JAWS 6/7/8/9 don't contain the Brailliant drivers so you can't install
it from the JAWS end, either as part of a JAWS install or adding a
Braille display afterwards.

Put the Brailliant CD in the drive. Plug the Brailliant display in and
it will start the new hardware wizard. Don't connect to Windows Update
to search for the software, but if the automatic installation doesn't
pick up the drivers, point to the folder Drivers on the CD and it will
install the USB drivers for the Brailliant. Two installs are needed, the
first for "Brailliant 64", the second for "Brailliant 64 USB Serial
port". Both will bring up a message about "not [having] passed Windows
Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP" - ignore these
warnings and carry on.

Next, go into the Device Manager (System Properties dialogue, Hardware
page) and, under Ports (COM & LPT), find the Brailliant. It will have a
Com Port assigned to it. Note the number of the port.

On the CD, find the JAWS folder and start the driver install setup. It
will prompt for the type of connection, the size of the Braille display
and the com port. If there is more than one version of JAWS installed,
it will default to the highest version, but you can choose an earlier
one if you want.

Stop and restart the PC and JAWS, and you should find the display comes
up. You might need to go to JAWS, Options menu, Braille and find it in
the list for the default.

Steve

I'm using one as we speak. You have to install a driver because JAWS
doesn't have one built in. The other sort of strange thing you have to
do even before you install the driver is to install a virtual com port
if you're going to use a USB connection. It's not difficult; it's just
a pain. The size of the display makes it worth it in my opinion,
especially if your client is using a laptop and wants something very
portable. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone. I'm doing a bit of research for a client who's
interested in using JAWS with the Brailliant display from HumanWare. I
was wondering if anyone is using this successfully. I didn't see the
Brailliant listed in the list of supported displays, so wasn't sure if
it'll work. Before we order this stuff I really want to check out
compatibility. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks much in advance.
