JAWS 8 and Links in Outlook Express

Hi all,
On behalf of my friend. Whenever he tries to click links in an e-mail,
including links to e-mail addresses, none of the associated programmes
(Internet Explorer and another window of Outlook Express) will open and
instead loses focus instead. Does anyone know what the problem is please and
very kindly help him out? I tried asking him to make both programmes their
defaults, but they're already set that way. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!
