Yes that is right, shift f5 to return to where you were is actually a word
keystroke. But the important thing to note is as you said IF YOU SAVE
before you exit. I remember one time spending hours on this on JFWLite
trying to figure out why it didn't always work, ha ha. And the answer was
so simple, you can't just open it and close it, you have to save it.
I did look up the keystroke for bookmark, after you select the text and it
is:

Bookmark Ctrl+Shift+ F5

Thankfully there are many ways to do something in windows.

Also in Word if you save before you exit, the next time you open the
document, you can return to where you left off by holding shift and
hitting F5.

On the web a nice feature of later versions of Jaws is to return you to
where you were.

Are you talking about in word?
You could insert a bookmark.
Select some text and the point you want to remember.
Insert menu, bookmark (letter K).
Type a name for the bookmark. Don't put any spaces in the name.
Enter on the add button.
Then to go back to the bookmark, press control G for the go to command.
make sure you have bookmarks selected and you can tab to the list of
bookmarks, and find your bookmark and enter on the go to button (or alt
T).
is there a quick navigation key to go from bookmark to bookmark? Or a
way
to list them? I don't remember, I don't use word that much anymore.

where
I quit last time?
