Thanks, Steve. I don't know what set this thing off, as it has come and gone several times over the last year. As you know, Firewall is really easy to reach in XP Pro, so turning it off isn't rocket science. I recall Security Center as being a little tricky to navigate, but will get in there and see if I can shut it up. Thanks. Find Security Center in the list, and press Enter. On my system, when the Security Center opens, focus is on a Resources button. I Tab once to a link labelled "get the latest security and virus information from Microsoft" and can then DownArrow to a link labelled "change the way Security Center alerts me". Press that link to open a dialogue with some checkboxes that can be used to specify which alerts you want to hear, or not. Are there any other XP users bothered by constant reminders that your firewall is turned off? I can verify that my firewall is on. I'm told to click the balloon to fix this problem--lotsa luck. By the time JFW reads it, the balloon has disappeared, or is about to. You'd have to have the fastest mouse in the west to click this thing, while the clicking's good--and that presumes you know where to find it. How can I convince this fool system that its firewall is indeed on? If you wish, you can reply off list to tlisle@xxxxxxxx, as I realize this one is marginal, at best. Go into control panel. 2. Hit F to find folder options and hit enter. 3. Go to the view tab. 4. Tab down until you are in a tree view. On my system it is 2 times. 5. Go to the last item which should be "show pop up description for folder and desktop items" and make sure it is set to off. 6. Hit enter on apply and then on ok.
