Hi,

first, thanks to all who did jump in with constructive replies.

I was able to solve the problem, but it cost me lots of patience, and I had some sleepless hours. For anyone running into the same thing under Windows 7 release candidate, here is how I did it:

1. Thanks to an option from the windows installer, I was able to log the installation process for the mirror display driver. There, I found out that a folder named "HJSMEM" (I suppose HJ is HenterJoyce here) is created to copy certain files for the video intercept installation. should this folder exist under c:\windows\system 32, it needs to be deleted after an uninstall of JAWS. 2. the following files, and pointers to them inside the registry, should also be deleted to ensure that no traces of the video driver remain in Windows
C:\Windows\system32\fsKMgr.dll
C:\Windows\system32\fskutil.dll
C:\Windows\system32\fsVidMag.dll
C:\Windows\system32\fsvidmir.dll
C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\fsvidmir.sys
To do this, press WindowsKey+r for the run dialogue, and type "regedit".
Press ctrl+f to bring up the find dialogue, and type in the folder name and file names to see whether they exist inside the registry.
If no file is found, just close registry editor.

Once this is done, you first need to remove your graphics card from the system. Using an alternative screenreader, such as NVDA (www.nvda-project.org) and or narrator in combination )started pressing WindowsKey+r and typing narrator, then enter), or sighted assistance, go to device manager, found typing the word device manager into the search box of the start menu. A tree will show up inside the manager, press "g" for graphics adapter or graphics card, I don't know the exact word since my Windows is German. Expand the graphics item, and under it you will see the model and brand name of your installed graphics adapter.
Remove it by confirming the warning message that appears.
Note:
You may also find a checkbox where it says "remove drivers as well", or something similar. On previous ocasions, I had used this option, but the video intercept would refuse to install then. Try both variants, with or without removing the drivers should problems arise with one variant or the other. When prompted to reboot your system for the changes to take effect, confirm by choosing "yes".

3. Using the prefered screenreader of your choice or sighted assistance, open the start menu, and choose "windows update". You may also type the words into the search box and locate the item with the arrow keys. Have Windows Update search for new updates, your graphics card should be one of them. If it is not, you will need to go into device manager, search for something that says "unknown device", or maybe it will just say "standard graphics adapter". Then, you will need to use the context menu on that item, choosing install driver, and your graphics adapter should be recognised again. In my case this did not happen, and Windows Update worked, I am just writing this down in case Windows update doesn't find any update for your graphics card.

Choose install, and when prompted to restart, choose "yes".
Now start the JAWS installation file, and complete the installation process as required. You might want to assign a name to the installer file on your desktop, should you have no sighted assistance or no other screen reader

Restart, and if all went well, JAWS should be functioning correctly.

Hope that this was helpful to someone out there.

Regards,
Nermin

Nermin,

I'm not sure what the "RC" implies, nor why FS refuses to help. What's that
all about?

In any case, we walked through the registry, cleaning out any keys that were
specific to JAWS, and there were several with the multiple-character key
names that start with the left bracket ([) symbol.

The most important part of the registry surgery had to do with finding
instances of jfwvid and deleting them. I recall there were jfwvid(0) and
jfwvid(1) in my registry that all needed to be removed. Apparently these
were related to the video chain.

Again once all the changes were done and the registry was saved, JAWS was
non-functional and the system needed to be rebooted to a non-JAWS state.
Then I launched a JAWS install executable that I had set up as an icon on my
desktop, and followed the instruction. It was basically a very clean,
first-time install and of course required that I go through the activation,
so keep your original activation code handy.

Alternatively you could also install JAWS using your original CD, rather
than a desktop launch.

Again it's strange that FS is resistant to helping.

Dave

Hi Dave,

do you happen to have any documentation or something that you remember off
your head to get rid of this issue?
FS tech support said "no support for RC Systems", I don't even remember the
name of the gentleman.
Somehow I understand it, but I am not going to sue anyone or so, I just want
a working system.
I did already install and uninstall JAWS 10, also reinstalled and
uninstalled the mirror driver to no avail, looked inside the registry, and
indeed, there were some references left, but I dare not touch anything
before I know about which key to delete etc.
Sighted assistance is not an option, since there is none available at this
point, reverting to an earlier OS would mean installing it all from scratch.
This really sucks, when you have a working system in theory, and the only
thing preventing you from using it, is what you use every day, wow that's
tough.

Nermin,

I'm thinking that your only solution might involve editing the registry.
When I had similar problems with a DameWare Mirror driver that installed
and
messed up my JAWS I got on the phone with Tech Support and with their
step-by-step instruction we removed any and all JAWS elements that had an
impact on the video chain. Then a reboot and re-install from scratch.

Sorry I have no steps to give you other than call FS in the morning, and
take two aspirin.

Dave

Hi all,

this is by far the most curious situation I've ever seen, but here goes:

Vista Home Premium didn't want to start up, bluescreen.
Fix with a Windows 7 RC DVD, and a clean upgrade of the operating system,
with JAWS 9.0 at that time, everything running smoothly. After the
Upgrade,
JAWS 9.0 refused to start up correctly, complaining that the Freedom
Scientific Mirror Display Driver hadn't been installed properly, and that
restarting the system might solve the issue.
Restarting didn't do much of anything, so I uninstalled JAWS with shared
components, reinstalled JAWS, but this time 10.0.1154.
Still the same result.
No mouse emulation, no proper recognition of some parts of the screen. I
tried various combinations of uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS, going
into
device manager and removing some driver remainders, installing a prior
display driver using a 9.0 built, and manually deleting
fs_something.dll-Files that were part of the bloody fantastic driver
architecture.

And now I am at a loss as to what to do next.
Is there a stand-alone version of the mirror driver somewhere, and what
can
I do to fix this?
This is a laptop with 2 Gig Ram, 200 gig HD, card reader, intel graphics
chipset, a German brand with the German Version of Windows 7 RC, and the
corresponding German JAWS 10.0.

Any help would be really appreciated, since this Laptop is not mine, and
is
used mainly for business purposes.

Regards,

Nermin
