Hello Alan and Jeffrey: Thank you both for the prompt reply. Both of you gave very good instructions. I have two additional questions! 1. If you want to use two columns of a table for data, for example, "a3:b10", can you expand just those cells and leave the rest of the table at their default values?2. As I said in my email, my table is four columns wide. I want to center a heading at the top of the table, combining the cells "a1:a4". How do I dothat? Thanks in anticipation sincerely: Dave Durber ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey Schwartz" <sidney.schwartz@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 11:00 PM Subject: RE: Expanding the width of cells in Excel 2003Highlight the first cell in the column. Hold down control and press spacebar. This will highlight the entire column. Alt-o for the format menu. Arrow down to column and hit enter. Arrow to width . change the numberinthere to the one you want. It may take some experimentation as thenumbersdon't appear to correspond to characters. Alternatively, You can type in what you want despite the fact that it is wider than the column. Repeatthesteps above but instead of width, choose autofit or the like. In thiswaythe column will expand if you put in a larger entry. Hope this helps. I want to create a spreadsheet with four columns. The first column will contain text data, while the other three columnswillcontain numerical data. My problem is that the default number of characters in a cell is nine, as far as I know. I need to expand the first cell of the first column in the table, so thatitcan take up to 20 characters of data, for example. Either I have overlooked or missed something but I cannot seem to be abletoachieve what I want. Any suggestions will be most welcome.
