Hi all!
I need to use SPSS for my graduate level stats class. I'm running spss
version 16.02 under windows vista home premium sp1 on my hp pavilion laptop.
I have jaws eight, nine, and ten on my system. I realize that script support
for spss was dropped with the release of jaws nine. SPSS was not at all
accessible following installation. None of the dialogues would read, even
when using the jaws cursor, and the menu bar wouldn't even display. There is
supposedly a way to enable accessibility by utilizing the java runtime
environment. A pdf file containing explicit instructions can be found at
http://support.spss.com/ProductsExt/SPSS/Documentation/SPSSforWindows/index.

In summary, you need to set the java runtime environment to spss by editing
the path variable in advanced system settings, and copy the
accessibility.properties file from the spss cd to the jre\bin folder in the
spss program directory. I am afraid, however, that these instructions were
written for an xp user rather than a vista user, because editing the
environment variable accomplished nothing. I am still just as unable to
access spss as I was before. Installing and running jaws 8 did not yield any
positive results. I am stressing out over this, because the premise for the
entire class is performing these statistical analyses in spss. I know
there's a way to make this program accessible, and I'm willing to do
whatever I have to in order to see that done, even if it means downgrading
to xp. I'm at a total loss as to what I can do though. Maybe I'm missing a
step somewhere in the instructions. Maybe some component is missing, but I
don't think so. Any assistance which anyone could offer in this matter would
be greatly appreciated. I need to do well in this class, and finding a way
to access spss is really the only way that I can be assured of a good grade.
Thanks!
Allison
