Alan,

If James isn't able to help you, let me suggest that you consider
switching to the individual message mode, and setting up a rule in your
email package to move the list emails into their own folder.  This ends
up working just like a digest, except that you then get to control
exactly how often you check your email and so how long it will take you
to download that particular group.  It also offers the advantage that
when you want a quick answer, you can check more frequently.  It also
offers the advantage (if your email package supports it) of viewing the
messages by thread.

I can't think of a single disadvantage once you begin using rules.
