Cingular Launches New TALKS=99 Software for Visually =
Impaired Customers
ATLANTA, Oct. 8 -- Cingular Wireless has launched =
TALKS=99, a speech-enabled application that allows convenient, audible =
access to text messaging, e-mail and phone directory assistance for =
mobile phone customers who are visually impaired.=20
Created in partnership with Scansoft, Inc., TALKS=99 =
is compatible with Nokia 6620 and converts menus, instructions and =
content on the screen into speech, which is relayed through the phone's =
internal speaker or through a headset. One of the unique features of =
TALKS=99 is that it announces the incoming caller, enabling users to be =
selective with the calls they take and keeping them on an equal footing =
with sighted customers.=20
With TALKS=99 and Nokia 6620, users can:
a.. hear caller ID information and check logs of =
incoming and outgoing calls;=20
b.. write and hear e-mails, text messages and notes; =
c.. manage contact information and dial phone =
numbers from the directory;=20
d.. use the appointment calendar;=20
e.. edit and add contacts, settings and profiles;=20
f.. use the calculator, unit converter, and alarm =
clock;=20
g.. receive audible information about the battery =
level, network and signal strength.
Currently, the Nokia 6620 is the only handset Cingular =
offers that is compatible with TALKS=99. The product package includes =
the handset and software, which are each sold separately. The Nokia 6620 =
can be purchased for $299 after the $100 rebate offered with a two-year =
contract. The TALKS=99 software retails for $199, but Cingular is =
offering an introductory rebate for a limited time to customers with =
visual disabilities who can receive a $199 service credit rebate for a =
two-year contract or a $100 service credit rebate for a one-year =
